hanami celebration in Ueno park in Tokyo

Spring in Japan: A Dive into Hanami

Hanami, a traditional custom of Japan, has its roots in the Nara period. It is a practice of admiring the fleeting beauty of flowers in full bloom. This custom is practiced during spring, mainly with the famous cherry blossoms, called Sakura. Hanami also includes the appreciation of apricot flowers (Ume), which bloom earlier, as well as those of the peach tree, which bloom later. We perceive this ritual as a period of renewal. It highlights the beauty and fragility of life with the beginning of spring and the end of winter.

Cultural and symbolic meaning

Cherry blossoms, national symbols of Japan, hold particular importance in Japanese culture. They are widely represented on various items such as kimonos and tableware. In addition, they are associated with notions of peace and are even considered symbols of the samurai spirit. It should be noted that cherry trees (Prunus serrulata) do not produce edible fruit. These trees are purely decorative in Japan.

Hanami progress

Hanami is a major event in Japan, often spanning several days during the spring. Parks and public gardens are transformed into gathering places. They attract a crowd of people who come to admire the flowers and participate in the celebration. Families gather under cherry trees, spreading blankets to share moments together. Besides admiring flowers, Hanami also includes various activities such as dancing, music, karaoke and games. Stalls offering food, drinks and souvenirs add to the festive atmosphere.

Social and traditional importance

The arrival of cherry blossom marks an important moment in the Japanese calendar. It’s an opportunity for families, friends and colleagues to come together to “view flowers”, dance and have lunch at famous places like Ueno Park in Tokyo. We follow the progression of flowering from the south to the north of Japan over several days carefully. This celebration also marks the start of the new fiscal, school and university year.
