Miyajima, also known as Itsukushima Island, is a small island located in the Seto Inland Sea, about an hour by train from Hiroshima, Japan. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan, mainly known for its Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as its iconic floating torii, considered one of the most spectacular sights in Japan.
Itsukushima Shrine is the main point of interest on the island. It was built in the 6th century and is considered one of the most sacred shrines in Japan. The shrine is best known for its floating vermilion torii, which stands majestically in the sea. At high tide, the torii appears to float on the water, creating a breathtaking view for visitors. The island was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, with Itsukushima Shrine as a cultural site.
Besides Itsukushima Shrine, there are many other things to see and do on Miyajima Island. Visitors can explore the island’s charming shopping streets, where they can find local souvenirs and culinary specialties such as momiji manju, a small cake filled with red bean paste and shaped like a maple leaf.
Visitors can also walk in Itsukushima Forest, a dense and preserved mountain forest, which is home to several temples and shrines. Another point of interest is Momijidani Park, famous for its cherry and maple trees, which offer a beautiful view of the mountains and the sea.
For nature lovers, there is also the possibility to see the sika deer, wild animals that roam freely on the island. Deer are considered divine messengers in the Japanese Shinto tradition, and they are protected on Miyajima Island.
To get to Miyajima Island, you must first travel to Hiroshima, a city located in the western region of Japan. From there, there are 2 transportation options available to get to Miyajima Island:
- By train and ferry: Take the JR Sanyo Line train to Miyajimaguchi Station (about 30 minutes from Hiroshima). At Miyajimaguchi Station, follow the signs for the ferry that will take you to Miyajima Island. The ferry ride takes about 10 minutes.
- By streetcar and ferry: Take the Hiroden streetcar to Hiroden Miyajimaguchi Station (about 45 minutes from downtown Hiroshima). From there, follow the signs for the ferry that will take you to Miyajima Island. The ferry ride takes about 10 minutes.
It is important to note that Miyajima Island is a sacred island and it is forbidden to bring firearms or knives, as well as to take shells or stones from the island. It is also forbidden to smoke in public on the island.
