Enoshima Island is a small island located in Sagami Bay, about one hour from Tokyo by train. This island is famous for its Buddhist temple, Shinto shrines and panoramic ocean views.
The main temple of the island is Enoshima Temple, also known as Benzaiten Temple. It is dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of art, music and knowledge. Visitors can see a statue of the goddess and a nearby shrine dedicated to Benten, the goddess of the sea. The temple is also known for its cherry blossom celebrations in March and April.
Enoshima Island also has several Shinto shrines including Hetsunomiya Shrine, Nakatsumiya Shrine and Okutsunomiya Shrine. These shrines are dedicated to various Shinto deities, such as the goddess of fertility, the goddess of the sea and the deity of sports.
In addition to the temples and shrines, Enoshima Island also offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can take a 201-step spiral staircase to the top of the island, where they can enjoy the view of the ocean and the surrounding mountains. It is also possible to take a walk on the island’s suspension bridge, which offers a spectacular view of Sagami Bay.
Enoshima Island is also known for its food. Visitors can enjoy local specialties such as anago-don, a bowl of rice covered with grilled eel, or shirasu-don, a bowl of rice covered with small fresh white fish. There are also many stores selling souvenirs and local snacks.
Finally, Enoshima Island is also known for its summer festival, the Enoshima Tenno Matsuri, which takes place in July. The festival is dedicated to Benten, the goddess of the sea, and includes fireworks, traditional dances and religious ceremonies.
