Tamagotchi, the cult toy of the 90s

The Tamagotchi (たまごっち), a toy that became cult in the 90s, is back in the spotlight in this year 2020. This small egg-shaped object is an animal life simulator, which has conquered the youth of Generation Y.

Tamagotchi was created in 1996 by Akihiro Yokoi of WiZ and Aki Maita of Bandai. According to Bandai, the name Tamagotchi is a word combining the Japanese word “たまご” (tamago), which means “egg,” and the English word “watch” (ウオッチ uocchi). It quickly became a huge success all over the world, becoming a real fashion phenomenon. The goal of the game was simple: to take care of a small virtual animal by feeding, playing and cleaning up its droppings. If the care was neglected, the virtual pet could die. If care was provided properly, the small animal could grow and evolve.

Tamagotchi was a popular toy for children and teenagers, but also for adults. It was a real craze, with lines in front of stores to get one.

In 2020, the Tamagotchi is back, with new features and a more modern look. New models include features such as online connectivity, additional games and even the ability to connect with other Tamagotchis to play together.

Despite its venerable age, the Tamagotchi remains a popular and beloved toy among life simulator enthusiasts. It is a symbol of Generation Y, who grew up with this small egg-shaped object. For the youngest, the Tamagotchi is a toy that offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, while for the oldest, it represents a return to the happy days of their childhood.
