Kenpo Kinen-bi Constitution Day in Japan

May 3 in Japan is Constitution Day, also known as “Kempo Kinenbi”(憲法記念日). The day celebrates the establishment of the 1947 Constitution, which was adopted by Japan after World War II and is considered a founding document of the country’s modern democracy.

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Japan and is marked by official ceremonies, speeches and activities to celebrate the constitution and its principles of freedom, democracy and human rights. People also gather to celebrate peace and unity, as well as to honour past sacrifices to establish modern democracy in Japan.

This day is considered an important opportunity for the citizens of Japan to reflect on the importance of the constitution and to continue to uphold its fundamental principles for the future of the country.

This day is part of the Golden Week. On this occasion the National Diet (Japanese Parliament), located in Tōkyō’s Kasumigaseki district, is exceptionally open to the public. On this day, the Japanese have the custom to make a wish for the prosperity of the country.
